Decorative Fluorescent Light Panels - Diffuses Light While Looking Great!

Most people love fluorescent light panels because they are affordable to use and they provide a lot of light to an area. In addition to the good aspects of fluorescent lighting, there are also drawbacks as well. Two main drawbacks of fluorescent light panels are that they are sometimes too bright for our needs and they are not very attractive.

In order to take care of these two problems, decorative light panels were created. The difference in light panels is very distinct. A normal, clear panel for fluorescent light fixtures allows all the light to filter through from the bulbs. Often times this is very harsh light and can be overwhelming to a space. Instead of dealing with the harsh light, it can be diffused further.

Decorative

Decorative fluorescent light panels diffuse light by creating an image that uses different colors to create different effects; when this happens, the image results in something very pleasing to the eye. There are unlimited images that can be created and placed on a light panel. Many people choose to buy stock images such as clouds, flowers, flags, trees, cartoons and more while others choose to create a custom image. This image could be of the company logo if a business, a family picture if a home or anything else that the person or businesses chooses. If you can think it, they can make it!

Decorative Fluorescent Light Panels - Diffuses Light While Looking Great!

One thing to keep in mind when selecting a decorative fluorescent light panel is to deal with a company that will cut the panel to your specific dimensions- preferably at no additional charge. It is important to make sure the company has that option because fluorescent light panels, if not cut properly, have a tendency to break. In order to keep the panels looking great, be sure to leave the cutting aspect up to the professionals. If needing to make minor adjustment, be sure to read all instructions thoroughly and remember to carefully cut for your safety and the panel's appearance.

In the big picture, decorative panels are easy to install. They can take as little as 10 minutes to install. Another great perk about these items if the affordability factor; light panels are very affordable, typically about .00 each. This is a one-time cost and there is no installation fee because it is a do-it-yourself project. Options are endless when using decorative fluorescent panels because they can be changed many times throughout the year, easily, to coincide with holiday's seasons or special occasions. Create a space in the office, waiting room at a business location or even at home that is creative and expresses the individuality of your location.

Decorative Rocks and Ornamental Stone - Landscaping

It's time to break out of the everyday landscaping design. What does your lawn consist of? Lots of green grass - that takes a lot of time to mow and a lot of water to look healthy, trees and shrubs. Perhaps some flowerbeds flanking the house itself.

But there's so much more you can do with your landscaping, if you just decide to do things a bit differently.

Decorative

In desert locations, of course, like Arizona and Mexico, why bother to try to force grass to grow at all? Why not simply cover your yard with attractive, ornamental rock and stone, with a few shrubs. Or as the joke has it, "I'm retired, I've mowed my last lawn!" The reason is simple - you may think water is a renewable resource - but it doesn't renew as fast as mankind is consuming it. In desert states where water comes from below ground aquifers, the level of this fresh-water source is lowering every year, and rainwater cannot replenish that level fast enough.

Decorative Rocks and Ornamental Stone - Landscaping

Even if you don't live in a desert climate, there's no reason why you can't make a rock garden - either large or small - in part of your yard. Such a garden will cut down on the time needed to mow your lawn, there'll be no need to spread pesticides around, and it will be a quiet and restful place around which to sit.

Like any other landscaping element, a rock garden does have to be planned carefully. Rock doesn't absorb water - so any rain run-off will go straight into your lawn and does need to be carefully drained off. Don't put your rock garden over electrical or phone lines, either.

You may think that a rock garden is equivalent to a Japanese garden, but that isn't necessarily the case. The Japanese garden combines three elements: stone which represents mountains or islands, water - representing purity, and plants. A Zen garden is what most people think of when they hear the term Japanese garden - a stretch of white sand with black rocks placed strategically about, and one meditates by raking the sand smooth.

There are two ways to install a rock garden...one would be to make the rock look like a natural outcropping of bedrock...used to cut off an inconvenient slope. The more usual design is to pile up the stones - both large and small - in harmonious groupings...and if you simply must have greenery, leave small gaps between the rocks into which the plants may be placed.

Surf the web to get ideas for how to design your rock garden, and venture far and wide, into sites from Japan and India as well as the United States. You'll find beauty everywhere.

Ladder Shelving - A Decorative Display

Ladder shelving is exactly what it sounds like: shelving which resembles the steps on a ladder. It's a great solution for areas which lack space, but which are perfect to use as decorative feature.

Typically, ladder bookcases have up to five shelves, the lowest one being the deepest, with each shelf occupying a smaller footprint than the one beneath it.

Decorative

In fact, depending on what you plan to put on it, you could actually use a real ladder as a shelving unit by leaning it against the wall without opening it. Since there won't be much depth to the shelves if you do this, make sure you leave the ladder in a part of the room which doesn't get much people traffic. It's perfect for displaying changing artwork or photos and adding interest to a corner.

Ladder Shelving - A Decorative Display

Alternately, you can open up the ladder, turn it sideways and add three or four shelves which you balance on the parallel steps on each side. That arrangement gives you a lot of instant shelf space with no need to install anything. If you are concerned about the shelves remaining balanced, you can easily secure them to the steps of the ladder with some screws. Measure the depth of the step and the thickness of the shelf. Buy screws that will go through the step (from the bottom) and into the bottom of the shelf, without going all the way through the shelf. This way the screws won't be seen at all.

If you buy a wooden ladder you can paint it any color you wish and get matching shelves. If you prefer a more modern look, go for a chrome finish instead.

If you have the space, you might want to consider buying 2 identical ladders. You can buy long planks of wood for the shelves, and create a whole system. To really add flair, have the ends of the planks extend past the ladders on both ends. Have the planks cut so that the bottom plank is the longest, and then shorter and shorter. The end effect will look like a huge ladder!

You can also use a short stepladder as a plant stand when it's not in use.

Ready-made ladder shelving comes in a variety of designs, from basic wood to hand carved designs which add a touch of elegance. They don't hold a lot of storage, and are best used in areas where you want to display items for decoration.

Many units come both as corner and regular units so you can mix and match them to make the best use of the available space. Consider, as an example, adding ladder shelving to both corners of the fireplace wall. The effect will be to soften the impact of the fireplace, giving a sense of symmetry and balance.

Whatever you decide, keep in mind that ladder shelves are freestanding, so you can always move them around as your room design evolves.

Prefer Sitting in Your Garden to Working in It? It's Decorative Gravel Time!

If you prefer sitting in your garden to working in it, it's decorative stone gravel time! There's so much you can do to any garden with gravel to make your favourite outside space a place to treasure and love.

Decorative gravel need not detract from the beauty of all your flowers and plants. It need not detract from the pristine perfection of your lawn. It will, however, enhance everything in the garden to make your leisure time there even more enjoyable.

Decorative

There's something very special about decorative stone gravel. It can and should be used as a complementary feature in your garden, and not as something that competes with every plant and flower you have. This is quite easy to achieve fortunately, for gravel is a material that naturally blends into any nature setting.

Prefer Sitting in Your Garden to Working in It? It's Decorative Gravel Time!

A garden path is probably the most obvious way to use gravel in the garden. It doesn't have to be a long winding path that sweeps majestically from gate to door. It can be something much more modest and it will still have a powerful effect through adding a central focus to your garden.

The gravel in your path doesn't have to be boring either. There are a wide range of natural stone materials that can be used in a wide range of colours too. A modest path can be transformed from mediocre to magnificent by using colours and patterns. You are really only restricted by your own imagination.

If you have a large lawn area it can be a great idea to break it up into smaller areas by introducing small meandering paths across the lawn. These should be fairly narrow, probably no more than two feet wide, and they should not be straight. A winding effect works best in most circumstances, and can even be used for creating sheng fui chi, thereby expelling sha chi for a more harmonious space.

Another advantage in creating small winding paths through a large lawn is the fact that you will make the garden more maintenance-free. You will have less lawn to mow and therefore more time to sit in your garden, admiring the decorative stone gravel you have strategically placed throughout it.

The other obvious large area where you can have gravel in is a patio. Patios are great in any garden. They provide a space to relax in, or where you can set up a barbecue, or just sit and let the world go by, perhaps while enjoying a fine glass of wine on a splendid summer's evening.

Decorative stone gravel works really well in plant and flower beds. Apart from looking great, it helps to reduce moisture evaporation and soil erosion. This also means that you will have less garden maintenance work to do and more time to sit and admire the beauty of nature.

If you have a pond or some kind of water feature, decorative stone gravel really comes into its own. Stone and water go together as naturally as bread and butter and they look really good too. Some gravel scattered near the edge of a pond or by a small waterfall can really make it stand out, cutting down maintenance in the process and giving you something else that is beautiful to admire as you relax in your garden.

Christmas Centerpieces - Decorative Pieces That You Can Make Yourself

Christmas is one of the most eagerly awaiting occasions for one and all. This is the time when the creative juices of the people begin working overtime to ensure their homes are the best decorated during the celebrations.

People are willing to spend a lot of money on purchasing Christmas centerpieces that play a very crucial role. What they fail to realize is that with a little bit of creativity and time on hand, you can create your own Christmas centerpieces that are sure to garner attention. Flowers and candles can be used to create some of the most fascinating centerpieces that can adorn the dining table.

Decorative

Let us take a look at two beautiful Christmas centerpieces that you can make at home with minimal investment.

Christmas Centerpieces - Decorative Pieces That You Can Make Yourself

Idea #1: Poinsettia centerpiece

This is one of the many Christmas centerpieces that can be created in a very short span of time. There are four materials that you will need to have handy. You will need poinsettias that are low growing if you want fresh plants for your centerpiece or you can opt for artificial plants. You will also need a cache pot or a decorative bowl. The third requirement is Styrofoam or floral foam. And the final thing you will need handy is a little greenery, fresh or artificial.

The next step is getting them all together to form one of the beautiful Christmas centerpieces to adorn your table. Place the Styrofoam or floral foam in the cache pot. Place the cache pot in the decorative bowl such that the pot is not visible outside. Now place the artificial plants or poinsettias into the pot firmly so it does not fall off. Finally, at the base of the decorative bowl, make a trail of greenery. Now, your centerpiece is ready to be placed on the table.

Idea #2: Candlestick centerpiece

Christmas is the best time to bring your best candleholders from the cupboard. Polish the holders well till they begin to gleam. Purchase candles, either scented or non-scented ones, on various lively hues. Try finding the dripless candles so the wax does not fall and spoil the decoration. Also, get some craft wires or thin satin ribbons or French ribbons. First of all, wrap the craft wire around the candle holders. Then, use the ribbons and tie bows around them. Now, place the colorful candles securely in the holders and arrange them on either the coffee table or holiday table.

These are just two of the innumerable Christmas centerpieces that can be made at home. You can also use willow tree ornaments to come up with some centerpieces that can compliment your Christmas tree. Unleash your imagination and use simple things to come up with beautiful artifacts to adorn your house.

How to Make a Decorative Scarecrow

One of my favorite fall decorations is a scarecrow for my front porch. Now I know you can pick up really cute, inexpensive scarecrows at your craft shops. But nothing is more satisfying than using your creativity making a personal expression of your family, for almost no money, than making your own scarecrow! And it's not only easy, its a fun thing to do with the kids as well.

What you will need:

Decorative

One shirt
One pair of pants
Hat
Old white/ cream/ dark pillowcase for face, or scrap fabric
Plastic shopping bags or old newspapers
Safety Pins
String or narrow rope
Small amounts of straw, raffia, or dried grass
Permanent markers or felt scraps for facial features

How to Make a Decorative Scarecrow

Button, zip or close the shirt and pants where necessary, tie ends of shirt arms and pant legs closed with string or rope.

Stuff full with bags or newspaper.

Use safety pins to attach shirt to pants at waist.

Stuff pillowcase into size and shape of a face. Use a permanent marker for facial features or glue cut out pieces of felt for the eyes and mouth. Tuck into the neck opening of shirt, and secure with safety pins. Pin on hat.

Stuff a little straw or raffia into the neck opening edges, and the arm and leg openings. Glue in place if necessary.

Now that you have the basic scarecrow in place, consider the ways you can make it personal! For years my kids each made one of themselves, and we had a whole family of scarecrows (our family!) lining the fence. You can vary the type of clothes from an old fashioned farmer, to a clown, to a princess complete with tutu...what ever works for your family. Insert flexible wire into the arms and legs before you pin the body together for a pose able scarecrow. Make little kid scarecrows, or a scarecrow to remind you of a dear friend or family member.

Showcase your scarecrows on the front porch, sitting in a chair you can see from the back window, standing watch over your entryway, or perched in a windowbox, dangling his legs from the second story. Tip: Wire or tie your scarecrow down if you live in an area where it can be windy.

PVC Architectural Brackets and Decorative Corbels

Many styles of architecture have utilized the architectural bracket or corbel in its design. The colonial style of architecture is famous for dentil work and highly decorative corbels. The Victorian style made use of decorative brackets with lots of flair. The craftsman style of architecture popularized again architectural detail in its use of decorative supports in the eves and overhangs. More modern architecture, however, during the late 90s and early 21st century has take a more modest and economical approach to architecture, relying more heavily on functionality and efficiency.

Lately, however, with the downturn in the housing market, the buyers market has brought architectural detail back into architecture. Builders competing with one another for potential home buyers have had to enhance curb appeal to attract interest. With the advent of no rot materials such as AZEK and Versatex, PVC brackets have become popularized in the industry. Decorative PVC brackets, unlike wood, are designed to last a lifetime and never need replacement. They can be custom fabricated from manufacturers and are readily available with quick turnarounds.

Decorative

Architectural PVC Brackets are typically made using a laminating technique. Sometimes they are hollowed out to allow for dead wood installation from the sides. Other times they are made solid and can be mounted with a construction adhesive or with the use of lag screws. AZEK brackets are typically non-structural due to the thermal nature of the PVC and should not be used for structural overhangs without additional support.

PVC Architectural Brackets and Decorative Corbels

PVC brackets are more similar to foam, or urethane brackets, in the sense that they are designed to last forever, but act non-structurally. The advantage to PVC over foam is in customization. PVC brackets do not require expensive moulding techniques and can be hand crafted with relative ease.

Bedroom Decorating - Using Decorative Bed Pillows For A Professional Look

One of the main focal points in any bedroom design is the bed and decorative bed pillows help add to the design. You've probably even seen design shows on TV or pictures in magazines with those inviting looking beds that have the plumped up pillows, haven't you?

You might have even looked at your own bed and thought how great it would look with some decorative pillows - maybe you even tried this yourself but couldn't quite achieve the look that you see in the designer rooms. Luckily, it isn't that hard to get this look -you've probably just been going about the wrong way.

Decorative

The first thing is you need to buy the right kinds of pillows. Chances are the regular bed pillows that you sleep on every night aren't going to do the trick. You want decorative pillows that have interesting fabrics and designs. Now that's not to say that a plain cotton pillow case with a nice stripe down by the end or a a layer of lace on the edge won't look fabulous because they will with the right design. The key is to pick pillows with fabrics and patterns that go with your overall look.

Bedroom Decorating - Using Decorative Bed Pillows For A Professional Look

You don't want to have too many different patterns in the pillows, maybe some with a pattern and some that are plain but have a color that pick up the pattern. You can use interesting fabrics like silks, brocades and velvets as well as interesting accents on the pillows such as tufting, fringe and embellishments. What you choose really depends on your bedroom design.

The key to the plumping is that you have to set up the pillows in layers. You can't lay them down flat like you do when you're sleeping or you'll just end up with a big pile of pillows! You have to arrange them standing up on their edges and in rows.

The back layer of pillows should be a bit larger than the rest. You want to have either three or five pillows for this back row depending on how large the bed is and the size of the pillows. Stand them up on the edges and lean them against the headboard.

The second layer of pillows should be a little smaller than the back layer because you want to be able to still see the decorative back pillows. You'll also want less of them as you want the pillow arrangement to extend out from the headboard in sort of a triangular shape. So if you used three pillows in the back row try two in the row in front of it. Set those on their edges and lean them against the back row pillows.

Now you could make more layers, but three layers is pretty standard you don't want to many pillows or your whole bed is just going to be layers of pillows. For the last layer I like to use a bolster pillow - one of those long rounded tubular pillows that has a fancy fringe or tassel on the end. If you don't want to do this just use some smaller pillows for the front. These probably wouldn't be bed pillows but little decorative pillows that are smaller than your second row pillows and simply place those leaning against the second row pillows on their edges.

Viola! Now you have perfectly plumped decorative bed pillows that will give your bedroom design a professional look.

How to Do Underpinning in Foundations

Underpinning is a method used to increase the foundation depth. This may be done in case a developer wants to add more stories to a building. Also, the foundation could be damaged by tree roots and this method used for correction. The adjacent construction may have foundations lower than the existing thus requiring to be lowered. If basements are constructed very near an existing building, the foundation may need to be changed. The reason is for stability of the existing house. Cracks may appear in a building up to the base thus needing a foundation remedy.

The underpinning in foundations may be undertaken and but supervised by an engineer. This works should follow instructions keenly for safety. Before any commencement, of work the area of operation should be hoarded. The works take from excavation to finishes approximately a month to complete. The area to work on is measured and mapped out. The work should commence from the corners working inwards. This is done on load bearing walls only. Foundations without any load bearing walls are exempted. The defects on these walls can be corrected using most simple methods.

Decorative

The underpinning in foundations starts with excavations. This should be done under a strip footing. A length of one meter, a width of half a meter and depth of half a meter pit is dug. This is done in stages of two meters. This is distance between the pits. After the excavations, mass concrete is added to the cavity. Mixes are one part cement, three parts sand and six parts aggregates. Concrete is made to a good consistence and is poured into the cavity. Use form work on the edges. Use a rod bar ensuring that the cavity under the existing foundation is filled up.

How to Do Underpinning in Foundations

After the underpinning concrete is placed in the cavity, its allowed to set for two days. The operation is repeated for the next bay. This continues until the required foundation is complete. Ensure that the concrete is cured thoroughly before loading it. The next thing is to break off the projecting foundation. Cut the concrete flush with the mass concrete surface. after this is completed for all the bays, soil is then back filled and compacted thoroughly. Watering with a hose is done for consolidation of the soil. This is done upon completion of the work.

Best Concrete Sealers

Concrete sealers play a major role in strengthening and protecting concrete works. A number of concrete sealers are now available, including gum resins, linseed oil, silicon derivatives and film formers such as acrylics, urethanes and epoxies.

Film-former sealers containing solvent-based acrylics are the best choice for sealing surfaces in the case of outdoor applications, as these allow easy escape of moisture. If working with heavyweight concrete blocks, urethanes and epoxies are the most suitable.

Decorative

Epoxy sealers are ideal for industrial environments, concrete countertops, and food preparation areas since it can form a thicker and tougher film for chemical resistance. Significant types of epoxies are epoxy penetrating sealers and water-based epoxy sealers, which are used in marine applications. For maintaining concrete durability in highways, epoxy-based sealers coated with steel are used. In order to provide an abrasive-resistant finish to commercial areas, urethane sealers are the best. Urethanes can last five to eight years and epoxies up to 15 years.

Best Concrete Sealers

Concrete penetrating sealers such as silane, siloxane, and siliconate are the most excellent alternatives to treat concrete structures and parking garages affected by deterioration and acid rain. The main advantage of penetrating sealers is that they penetrate into the capillaries of the concrete surface and safeguard the concrete from stains, abrasions, and other harmful factors.

Best concrete sealers must be environmentally safe. They should also have the ability to form an impenetrable barrier to protect concrete surfaces from bacteria, fungus, and corrosive materials such as acids and salts. Further, these should not alter the surface appearance of concrete surfaces. The durability of a sealer depends on the wear and tear of the surface, the maintenance schedule, and the use of appropriate chemicals. It is best to avoid harsh chemicals and cleaners.

In the US, there are a number of local hardware and online stores to provide the latest as well as the best in concrete sealers.

Looking For Low Maintenance Garden Ideas? Look No Further Than Decorative Gravel

In springtime many of us look to the garden with the idea of sprucing it up a bit in preparation for the summer. We all love to have a beautiful garden that our neighbours can admire, but sometimes we don't always want to have to put in the considerable work that it usually entails.

You don't have to!

Decorative

Looking for low maintenance garden ideas? Look no further than decorative gravel. It won't actually make your flowers grow, it won't actually pull out the weeds for you, and it certainly won't do any digging for you, but there's a lot that it can do.

Looking For Low Maintenance Garden Ideas? Look No Further Than Decorative Gravel

Gravel is the secret weapon that thousands of gardeners quietly employ. They are the ones whose gardens are always admired. They are also the ones who do the minimum of work to achieve it, and even less work to maintain it. Others scratch their heads and wonder just how they do it. Gravel, or to be more precise, decorative gravel is the simple answer.

You can obtain gravel in a dizzying array of colours and shapes. It comes from all kinds of stone, both hard and soft varieties and it has all kinds of uses in the garden too. It has the wonderful ability to look expensive without being expensive, and it retains an elegance that only real stone can.

The obvious use of decorative gravel in the garden is in a path or driveway. There's nothing quite like the satisfying crunch of gravel underfoot, or under car tyres. It has a kind of quality sound, perhaps because all the country mansions featured in films usually have gravel driveways. There's a kind of nostalgic 1920s Jeeves and Wooster feel to gravel in the garden.

Gravel has more mundane, but useful application in the garden. Spread around a plant or flower bed over the soil it has the effect of preventing soil erosion from heavy rain and wind. Gravel can help to restrict the evaporation of moisture from the soil, helping plants and flowers to grow better. It also helps to restrict weed growth.

Your low maintenance garden comes from all the things you don't have to do as a result of using gravel. It can mean less watering, less soil management and less weeding for a start. If that was all, then it certainly would be worth it, but there's a lot more you can do.

If you have a large lawn area, consider breaking it up with areas of gravel. Using different colours and textures you can create a most pleasing effect. You will lower your maintenance level by not having to mow so much lawn. Now, surely that is an attractive proposition!

A large lawn can have paths meandering through it. It creates a lazy effect that breaks up the straight lines. It can also be used in this way for the principles of Feng Shui if you are in to that, but just because it looks great and gets you out of too much lawn mowing should be reason enough. It's true: If you're looking for low maintenance garden ideas, look no further than decorative gravel.

Floor Stencils - Ideas For Decorative Concrete Floors

Faux painting techniques are an economical and innovative way to transform any surface and can complement any decorating style. Dull concrete floors, both indoors and out, can be brought dramatically to life with paint.

In theory, almost any look can be replicated, by introducing color, pattern and texture. The ideal design will vary according to the room or space you are making over. You may want a color scheme or theme to complement the décor style and/or function of a room or outdoor area.

Decorative

Planning and Preparation

Floor Stencils - Ideas For Decorative Concrete Floors

Before choosing a design, look carefully at your surface and space. Some designs are useful for disguising flaws in a floor. For other designs you may need to patch and smooth flawed surfaces thoroughly first.

You will also need to think about the traffic in the area you are painting. Is it worth doing an elaborate, time-consuming pattern in a high traffic area? If you don't like the distressed look that will result, you may want to rethink. Designs also need matching to the surface area. Large, bold patterns may be out of scale for a small room. Equally, small, detailed patterns may get lost in large spaces. If you are using stencils, note that some manufacturers can resize stencils for you.

Inspirations for Faux Painted Floors

Brick and Stone

Brick (or 'block') and stone finishes can add texture and/or color and can be effective indoors or outdoors. Patterned brickwork is easily simulated using reusable stencils. They are available in a wide range of designs and are an easy option for beginners.

Simulating the effect of stone may require more expertise (and time) and so may be more suitable for smaller spaces. Many types of stone can be reproduced using paint. You could create a luxurious marble floor for your bathroom. Faux slate paving or flagstones will suit patios and indoor spaces, such as kitchens or hallways.

Tiles and Mosaics

Faux terracotta tiles are a versatile option for kitchens, patios and dining rooms. Their warm, earthy appearance goes well with the rustic Tuscan look and can add warmth in a modern home. Again, stenciling can be used to reproduce a tiled appearance. You could use paint to create a faux mosaic floor worthy of a Roman villa.

Patterned and Textured Finishes

For a finish that isn't too busy, you can use paint to create subtle texture. The color washing technique used to create a mottled or cloudy effect on walls can also be used on floors. Distressed and antique finishes that simulate wear and age may be suitable in some décor schemes.

With pattern, your choice is endless. Covering an entire surface is one option. Alternatively you could paint a faux rug, perhaps with patterns inspired by oriental carpets and kelims. You might prefer clean lines and geometric patterns. Stencils are always useful and can be used for patterned borders for a more understated look.

Bold or subtle, bright or neutral, faux painting techniques can give your floor an expensive-looking makeover that won't break the bank.

All of them are different when it comes to the things that make them grow. Consider some shrubs can be very expensive this is why it is important to do your research first. Simple Backyard Landscaping Ideas

For a very few homeowners, a front and backyard of just grass abutting up to their home's walls is enough. They like the simplicity and ease of maintaining their yard - just mow and go. But most of us like a bit of color. A walkway. Perhaps a trellis. Maybe a flower border. Something more than just a small patio slab left by the builder just outside the backdoor.

But then we think of the work involved. The cost. The planning involved.

Decorative

"Maybe the idea of big grassy yards front and back isn't so bad," we might think. "Backyard landscaping, front yard landscaping just isn't for us.

Simple Backyard Landscaping Ideas

But wait. Take a deep breath. Slow down.

Landscaping needn't be that difficult.

Take backyard landscaping, for instance. When you think of your backyard, you think of rest and relaxation, don't you? A sunny place for perhaps a barbecue. A warm spot on which to lie on a hammock, swing in the breeze, read a book and then take a snooze.

So keep it simple.

Here's a simple backyard landscaping idea: Why not install a flowerbed of blooming plants that attract butterflies? You can place it somewhat in the middle of your yard. It will become a focal point and just wait until your friends and neighbors come to visit! (Perhaps you'll want to have book on butterflies handy, see who can spot the most different kinds.)

For backyard landscaping ideas that attract butterflies, check out the National Wildlife Federation's information on the subject here

For a truly simple design, why not "just" have a lovely patio, with shrubs and/or flowering plants along its edges? A good cement/concrete contractor can pour a patio in an oval, curved or just about any shape for you. Add some shrubs, plants and/or some solar patio lights would make a lovely - and simple and peaceful - backyard landscape for you.

Speaking of shrubs, they can be a simple, inexpensive addition to your landscaping. Place them in front and in the back of your home, right up against the walls. They add great curb appeal without a lot of muss and fuss. And your shrubbery needn't be just different shades of green - many shrubs flower and provide wonderful bursts of color. Check out azalea, lilac, hydrangea, shrub rose, and dogwood at your local nursery to see if they appeal to you.

Don't forget plants that are native to your area. Head to your nursery or do some research on the Internet to see what plants are native to your state. A simple Google search of, say, "Pennsylvania native plants" will give you a wealth of information. Choosing native plants give you peace of mind because you know they do well in your climate and therefore will be easier to take care of.

Place wood chips around your shrubs, trees and bushes. They cover up the dirt - thus giving your landscaping a more polished look - and they also help cut down on weeds. They also provide food as they break down and help keep your plants moist.

Finally, don't forget the lawnchair - the perfect addition to your backyard landscape. After all, now that your simple backyard landscape is done, it's time to put your backyard to its real use - a lovely spot for a relaxing snooze on a summer Sunday afternoon.

How to Install a Decorative Concrete Overlay in 2 Days

Decorative concrete overlays are thin coats of fine concrete for resurfacing unattractive concrete surfaces. Most applications are on floors but can be applied to vertical surfaces as well.

The process is fairly simple when you have all the proper tools, product and systems. A basic application is achieved by priming floor with a polymer that looks like milk. It's white and the consistency of milk. Then polymer is poured into a 5 gallon bucket, add color, mix quickly then slowly add concrete and mix to a pancake batter consistency. Pour on floor spread evenly and thin.

Decorative

Most systems are a 2 coat process that are sealed with concrete sealers. That's it. Not a big deal.

How to Install a Decorative Concrete Overlay in 2 Days

Here are the steps to apply and complete over the weekend. This system is the same whether it's a 3,000 square foot retail store or a 500 square foot basement.

Step 1 - Friday night, after work. make sure surface is clean. Use blue painters tape on edges, columns, stairs. You may want to use plastic to protect your walls. Use the kind that comes in a roll with a strip of blue painters tape attached. Always apply from bottom and work up. Then spray (garden style inexpensive sprayer) or pour polymer on floor and mop on surface. Takes about an hour for a 500 sf space.

Step 2 - Saturday morning, Prime floor again with polymer and let dry. If room temperature is comfortable and slab is room temperature, dry time is less than an hour. Use this time to set up a mixing station. You need a drill and mixing paddle (available at home improvement stores) 2 five gallon buckets, a 5' x 7' tarp to protect floor, knee pads and a "Magic Trowel". (magic trowel is a squeegee used for spreading your mix)

Once polymer is dry mix first bucket of mix. Most overlay manufacturers package product to cover 200 square feet per bucket. Process is pour manufacturers specified amount of polymer in 5 gallon bucket, add color, mix using drill and mixing paddle for a few seconds. Then slowly start adding concrete and mix until smooth with no lumps.

Once mix is ready pour about a 2-3 foot diameter amount on floor and spread thin and randomly on floor. A 500 square foot floor should only take about an hour. Let dry for 5 hours. If there are any drip marks or high spots they can be lightly sanded with a 100-120 grit palm sander. Then apply second coat which is typically a finer, wetter coat. This step should be faster than the first.

Step 3 - Sunday, Apply 2 coats of concrete sealer. Acrylic sealers are recommended.Sealers should be sprayed on using your garden pump sprayer with light coats. Let dry 2-3 hours between coats. Final application is finish or wax coats. The wax coats are usually too thick for a pump sprayer so pour on floor and spread using a thick microfiber mop. Using a thick microfiber mop will not create streaks. There are a few wax finish coats that are 30% solids which are a 2 coat system. 25% solids wax coats usually require 5-6 coats to achieve same result as a 30% solids product. Each step of sealer and wax application should take 20 - 30 minutes.

That's the process. When you figure total application time for a 500 square foot floor it's about 5 hours of actual work with lots of dry time. Total cost of all tools, and product is approximately .50 - .00 per square foot.

If you plan on applying concrete acid stains or dyes add a day to the project. Stains and dyes are inexpensive but cannot be rushed. Floor needs 24 hours to dry. You don't want to rush it and trap moisture in your slab.

Stove Burner Covers - Reasons to Get a Set of These Decorative and Useful Stovetop Space Savers

Stove burner covers come in all shapes and sizes like rectangular, square and round. Types include stainless steel and ceramic for electric and gas stovetop set units. Many like to choose decorative sets for their range cooktop ovens. There are several excellent reasons for investing in a set of stove burner covers for your kitchen.

Mostly, many choose range top covers for their burners as a decorative touch. Homemakers don't always want to stare at dirty and charred gas stove burner covers. This is especially true if they are old and have been in use for many years or even decades. It's true that you can get new ones, but to save money, simply getting a set of covers for a stovetop may be more cost-effective. This goes for electric cooktop styles as well because these get dirty as spills and burns will accumulate overtime.

Decorative

As a decorative piece, shape and print are the major concerns. This depends on personal preference. Some like round while others prefer square stove covers. Others would rather get a rectangular shape and cover two burners at once with a double or dual type cover set. As for prints, there are an endless amount of designs from plants and flowers to animals. Fruit designs are popular as well like apple, banana, and bunches of fruit. People sometimes even choose different ones for certain holidays and times of the year. For modern households, getting a simple color like black could be the best choice.

Stove Burner Covers - Reasons to Get a Set of These Decorative and Useful Stovetop Space Savers

Companies that make these covers often use a couple of different materials. These include stainless steel for metal ones. These are probably more durable and will last longer. For more stylish ones for decoration, ceramic stove burner covers are the top sellers. These have that classic look and feel that may match the dinnerware of the particular household.

Besides the decorative aspect, these stovetop covers are very useful as well. When the stove and burners are not in use, these products can add to the surface area and storage area available in the kitchen area. For those that have a smaller living space, this can be a huge benefit. More space is now available for placing food that has been prepared.

Whether you own a gas or electric stove, cover sets for them can add a new look and storage space to your cooking area. There's nothing better than a tool that also looks good. If you want to spice up the look and feel of your home while adding a usefulness, buying a set of range cooktop stove burner covers to your kitchen will definitely help.

Creative Ideas for Church Wedding Flowers Using Decorative Pew End Markers

As the bridal party makes their way down the aisle the sweet fragrance of the wedding flowers fills the air and sets the stage for what is to come. Flowers on the pew ends, with church wedding flowers, or attached to a chair, for an outdoor wedding, not only add beauty and function to designated seating they can also evoke favorite memories from the family members and offer calming thoughts as they anxiously await the ceremony.

Such precious memories may be something as simple as a mother remembering the first flower her daughter gave her as a child or memories of the two of them sharing the same favorite flower. It may be the familiar fragrance that acts as aromatherapy and soothes the soul or just being surrounded by beautiful flowers marking the special occasion.

Decorative

Pew ends provide a wonderful space to add drama and excitement. There are so many choices and styles and they are surprisingly easy to make. I'd like to share some ideas on my favorite designs to add a special touch to pew ends. I'll include church wedding ideas as well as some outdoor ideas.

Creative Ideas for Church Wedding Flowers Using Decorative Pew End Markers

One of my favorite applications is to place a small arrangement on each pew and connect them with a floral garland between the pews. They don't have to be very big arrangements to make a statement, but you can of course make them as big as you like.

The garlands can be removed on one side for seating and allowed to hang down from the center arrangement. They look especially good when matched with a halo for the flower girl. This type of pew marker also works well for outdoor seating. In a less formal setting, the bridal family could be seated from the outside row so the garland would not have to be removed.

Floral garlands can be made from any type of greenery. Boxwood, ming fern, ivy, and rosemary are good choices. Small flowers can be wired into the greenery or it can be left as it is. The pew markers can be arranged in a style that compliments the bridal bouquet.

Winter weddings offer an opportunity to transform the venue into a winter wonderland. Curly willow or any other type of twig can be grouped together and used as pew ends, centerpieces, wreaths, door arrangements, etc.

The twigs can be spray painted white or flocked. Glitter or tiny battery operated rice lights can be woven through the branches. Trees can be cut and potted in plaster of paris to match the pew ends. Tiny "trees" can be made from the twigs and used as table top decorations.

Fall pew ends look good with maple leaves and any type of autumn flower. Maple leaves can be scattered on table tops for the reception with candles to continue the theme. Acorns are great additions as they have long been used as a symbol of strength and fertility.

Pew ends for a beach or tropical wedding could include sea shells with orchids, anthurium, bird of paradise or ginger flowers. A garland of tropical flowers made from a Hawaiian lei would make a beautiful pew marker.

If you prefer a very tall pew marker, candle holders or topiaries can be used. Keep in mind, though, that a large pew end can make it difficult to seat the guests and may obstruct the view of the front of the church. They do work well for outdoor events especially if the area is an open space.

My preferred method is to use a small satin ribbon to attach the pew arrangements. Not only do they look better than a plastic one, but they prevent scratching the expensive church furniture. If that is not an option such as in using a bundle of twigs, a strip of soft cloth can be wrapped around the pew with a piece of tape over the cloth to hold the twigs. Ribbon can then be used to cover the cloth and tape.

Turn your church wedding flowers into something elegant and spectacular by making good use of church pew ends.

Make Christmas Tree Napkins, Name Tags, And Ornaments Whether You Sew Or Not!

They Are Quick, Easy And Fun Gifts For Young And Old To Make For Family And Friends.

The trick is in the folding to make the napkin look like a Christmas Tree.

Decorative

Let the kids cut some out of paper and decorate their own.

Make Christmas Tree Napkins, Name Tags, And Ornaments Whether You Sew Or Not!

Use them as name tags, decorations, Christmas Tree ornaments and napkins, of course.

Napkins can be either single or double layer of fabric. They can be any size you want them to be. The example I am using here is a 14-1/2"

Use some pretty Christmas prints or some unusual decorative fabrics.

One year, I used a lacey fabric and rolled the edges with a gold metallic thread. Then, I hung them on my tree. It really looked pretty.

You really don't have to sew these napkins if you don't want to. You can use decorative edge craft scissors to cut the fabric and not finish it with sewing at all.

You can even use paper napkins if you like. Have fun with this idea.

Less than a yard of 45" wide fabric makes 6 napkins single layer or 3 double layer.
1-5/8 yards makes a dozen single layer napkins.

Preshrink all fabrics.

I also like to spray starch my fabric before I cut and serge or satin stitch the edges of my napkins.

Cut Napkins into 14-1/2" circles.

To make a paper pattern, draw a circle 14-1/2" in diameter.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Here is how to make a compass to draw your pattern.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Tie a string or ribbon to a pencil.

Measure the string back from the pencil 7-1/4".

Put a pin in the string/ribbon at that point.
(7-1/4" is the radius or 1/2 of the diameter of the 14-1/2" circle.)

This is your compass to help you draw your circle.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Here is how to draw your pattern.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Place some tracing paper down and put the pin in the center.

Now, extending the string, and using the pencil, draw a circle out all around the pin 7-/4"away.
This creates a 14-1/2" circle for your napkin pattern.

Label it and keep it for future napkins.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Single Layer Napkins

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Serge finish with the right side up on your serger.

I like to use the rolled edge finish on most of my napkins. It depends on the fabric.

Feed the circle of fabric to the knife slowly letting the knife shave off a little of the fabric.

Slightly overlap the beginning stitches about 2 inches.

Seal the end with "Fray Check". Let dry. Trim off the thread tails.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Double Layer Napkins

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Place 2 circles wrong sides together.

Make sure one circle's straight grain matches the other circle's bias grain.

This will minimize flared edges.

You can also apply slight differential feed to eliminate flared edges.

Or you might want to baste the two layers together to help hold them while you finish the edges.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Serge Finish Edges With A Serger

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

A rolled edge works well on light to medium weight single layer napkins.

A rolled edge may not work on the double layer fabrics or heavier fabrics. Test it first.

Try using a narrow satin balanced stitch instead.

Note: If you get the "Pokies", try wrapping the napkin bias edges in Solvy (a water soluble stabilizer) and then serge. Wash the Solvy away when finished.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Conventional Machine Satin Stitch Finish

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

If you don't have a serger, you can use your conventional sewing machine.

Finish the edges with a satin stitch sewing in from the edge using a stabilizer such as water soluble Solvy.

You may want to spray starch the napkins again before stitching. It might help.

You can apply "Fray Check" to the outside of the stitching when you are finished to seal the edges.

Let it dry and then trim off any excess fabric.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Fold and press the napkin into a Christmas Tree Shape.

Here are the folding instructions.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

1. Fold the napkin in half and press well. We will call this fold the center fold.

2. Fold again into quarters and press lightly. This is a temporary crease that we will use as a guide to establish the fold we actually want.

3. Open back up to the 1/2 fold again and measure 1-1/4" above the temporary quarter foldline.

4. Fold the napkin "back" along the 1-1/4" new line (the one above the quarter fold) and press well. We will call this fold, Fold A.

5. Now you have a fold at the top, (Fold A) and the lower part of the center fold to your right.

6. The upper part of the center fold that you just turned down, we will call Fold B.

7. Take the top Fold A and bring it over to meet the center fold edge to your right and press in place.

8. Now bring the upper portion of the original center fold (Fold B) over on top of Fold A and to the lower portion of the center fold edge and press again.

Voila! There you have a Christmas Tree.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Decorate your trees

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Add a bow, jingle bell, decorative Christmas button or whatever at the top of the tree if desired.

Embroider each family member's name on his/her napkin.

Use decorative stitches, paint or decorate your tree napkins any way you like.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

More Ideas For Smaller Trees

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Consider making smaller circles into trees, add a ribbon loop at the top and use them to decorate packages or to hang on your Christmas Tree as ornaments.

Use up lots of that stash! It is easy!

Or, how about letting the kids cut some circles from paper napkins and have them decorate their trees with crayons, stickers like stars, glitter glue, etc.

They could give them to family members, classmates, teachers, etc., use them on packages, hang them on the big tree, or use them as place cards at the dining table.

Be creative. You are the designer. Have fun making your Christmas Tree napkins!

It just makes sense!

Happy Holidays!

Wedding Speeches Father Of The Bride

"When my daughter announced she planned to marry the groom I thought I had better carry out some background checks. So I went to his local police station and asked if he was well behaved. The sergeant behind the desk was very reassuring. Apparently they never had any bother with him whenever he spent the night there."

Somehow you can get away with very corny jokes at a wedding; jokes that would fall very flat at any other venue. Perhaps it is that often half the crowd doesn't know the other half. Or perhaps it is that everybody is trying very hard to be polite, and make it a happy day for the bride and groom. But really, I think it's often more likely that most guests have already had "one too many" and will laugh at anything that's said, even a very modest attempt at humor.

Decorative

The father of the bride traditionally has a special place at weddings. Most likely this is because he was usually expected to be the host and foot the bill for the reception in times past. Shades of another tradition in some cultures and older times of paying a dowry, and the daughter leaving home to live with the groom's family, I suppose. The bill is often spread around a little more widely between the families these days. But it is still a wrench for a father to see his beautiful daughter leave home to live with her new partner. It's the public "giving your daughter away" tradition that makes it even worse. Many a father of the bride has secretly quickly wiped away a tear or two at his daughter's wedding.

Wedding Speeches Father Of The Bride

This special place for the bride's father sometimes means he gets the role of master of ceremonies for his daughter's wedding, and must step in from time to time and say a few words to keep the occasion moving along. Sometimes this role goes to the best man, to another guest who is an able speaker, or even to a professional entertainer, if the budget stretches that far.

Whether or not he is the master of ceremonies, the father of the bride is usually expected to give a short speech at the reception. The pattern is fairly well established by tradition:

1. A few opening lines, perhaps with some humor to get everyone's attention.

2. Thanks to the guests for coming and to the supportive people behind the organization of the event.

3. Some comments about the day so far, such as flattering comments directed to the ladies.

4. A few personal comments about how it feels to be father of the bride.

5. A few affectionate words on the bride.

6. Perhaps some comment on how the romance started and blossomed into the marriage.

7. A welcome to the family for the groom.

8. Some comments on the couple's plans, a few words of wisdom and advice, and best wishes for their future together.

9. A toast (or two), to the couple and their future, and perhaps to mention absent relatives and friends.

10. A few closing lines, often as the host wishing everyone a pleasant time for the remainder of the festivities.

Putting together a successful speech comes easy to some, but it can be a big help to get a professionally prepared draft and checklist to work off. After all, giving a father of the bride wedding speech may only happen once or twice in the lives of most fathers. And there are few things worse than being told afterwards by the bride's mother that you completely forgot to mention Aunty Mildred's hard work icing the wedding cake!

A Low Maintenance Garden With Decorative Gravel

Creating a low maintenance garden with decorative gravel is easy to do. Gravel is available in a dizzying array of colours and sizes that can fit into almost anyone's garden plans. Gravel is quite inexpensive and easy to use. It requires a minimum of maintenance and always looks great.

Decorative gravel can be bought in colours ranging from gold to white, black to red, cream to brown, and purple to green, any shade of grey, and practically any other colour in between. You can get small gravel sizes of 8 millimetres through to large sizes of 75 millimetres. This article offers you five different ways to have a low maintenance garden with decorative gravel.

Decorative

1. Use gravel around plants and flowers. This will add visual appeal to your flower beds. You can choose decorative gravel in a colour that enhances and contrasts the colour of each group of flowers or plants.

A Low Maintenance Garden With Decorative Gravel

Gravel around flowers doesn't just look good. It will help to avoid soil erosion as well as helping to control the weeds. Gravel around plants and flowers will also help to retain the moisture in the soil, which is very useful on a hot day in summer.

2. The edges of ponds and pools can greatly benefit from decorative gravel. Don't fall into the usual trap of making it all evenly ringed around the pool or pond. That looks unnatural. Vary the area amounts in places making it a more random layering. Use different colours and sizes to vary it even more, and possibly even include pebbles or sand, as well as larger rocks and stones.

3. A waterfall area can be truly enhanced through the use of decorative gravel. It needs to be used in conjunction with natural looking rocks and stones. The gravel can be used to fill in areas between the larger items giving the whole effect a much more rounded-off appearance.

4. Perhaps the most obvious use of decorative gravel is in a main path through your garden. For a path you are probably best to choose one colour and texture and stick to it, though using patterns or mosaics is quite possible too. A path is likely to take a lot of gravel to fill. As a rough guide, expect to need around one tonne of gravel for each five metres of path that's one metre wide and 100 millimetres in depth.

5. A large area of lawn with nothing to break up the monotony is not making the best use of your garden. Lawns need regular mowing. For the best low maintenance lawn, break the area up by creating winding decorative gravel walkways through it. These needn't be too wide, just enough for someone to walk over. You can be very creative here for a most pleasing effect using different colours and patterns.

Having a low maintenance garden with decorative gravel makes sense from so many perspectives. It will look great with just a minimum of planning and thought. There isn't very much work involved in creating it. It is fairly inexpensive, and you can cut down the regular maintenance work required by half if you do it properly. That has to be worth considering.

All About Retaining Walls - Concrete Retaining Walls and Decorative Retaining Walls

Introduction to Retaining Walls

First, a retaining wall is a structure that holds back, or "retains," lateral faces of dirt, water, or other materials. Retaining walls are used to prevent erosion or collapse of higher level ground onto a certain building, structure, or general area. The earth that is retained is often referred to as backfill. The word backfill is also used as a verb to describe placing more dirt behind a retaining wall to make the ground more level.

Decorative

Retaining walls can be the answer if you are blessed (or cursed) to a contoured lot. They can turn a steep slope into a terraced yard, creating a stair step effect instead of a slope.

All About Retaining Walls - Concrete Retaining Walls and Decorative Retaining Walls

Retaining walls can be constructed from many different materials using many different techniques. There are several factors that influence which choice will be the best choice for each situation, including cost, height of the wall, soil characteristics, and ground water conditions.

Generally, most municipalities require that any retaining wall over four feet in height be engineered or approved by a licensed engineer. It is important to check local building codes before starting any retaining wall projects, even if it is below four feet tall. After all, retaining walls should be structurally sound before there is any thought of aesthetic appeal. The retaining wall must be able to stand up to the pressure exerted by the backfill, also called lateral earth pressure. This lateral earth pressure is a majority of the force that the retaining wall will need to bear. Lateral earth pressure is determined by studying the weight of the soil unit, slope of the soil, soil type (for plasticity and adhesion purposes with clay soil types), and ground water levels. Engineers do many calculations with these factors to determine what design to implement with the wall. To homeowners and contractors that do not want to go through engineering steps, it is generally a good rule to overdo it. Many structural methods to build retaining walls with withhold earth, at least temporarily, with a height up to four feet, are adequate, which is why most local building codes require engineering if the wall will be over four feet tall.

However, even methods that may seem adequate for retaining earth can fail if they are not built properly. Many times, it is elements below grade that can make (or break) a retaining wall. Problems including bowing, slanting, or cracking are evidence of retaining wall failure because it was not successful in retaining the dirt. Cutting costs with a bad contractor, insufficient materials, or neglecting the below grade elements can turn out to be more expensive over time if replacement or repair is necessary often or if collapse of earth causes damage to nearby structures. For example, erosion can cause foundation issues if dirt erodes from under the foundation. This is just one example how a retaining wall failure can cause expensive problems aside from the cost to repair or replace the retaining wall.

Another aspect that is often neglected or underestimated that can cause failure of a retaining wall is drainage. Inadequate drainage of retaining walls can mean that water is trapped behind the wall, adding to the weight that the wall must hold back. Usually weep holes and/or drainage pipes are used to flush rain water and ground water from behind the wall. It is important that the drainage system, whatever it be, have a filter barrier to keep dirt from clogging the drain or weep hole.

Options for Retaining Wall Materials

· Railroad Crossties - Railroad crossties, also shortened to railroad ties, can be used as a retaining wall material; however, as with most every retaining wall material, it must be installed correctly in order to be a solution. For example, most railroad tie retaining walls will need a substantial footer to tie the crossties to in order to keep the bottom from sliding out. Also, there needs to be perpendicular members placed into the ground behind the wall to keep the wall from overturning. These members, called deadmen, should be at least 1.5 times as long as the wall is high and should be placed at minimum every 6 feet or so. Because railroad ties are wood (even though they are treated most of the time), there is a risk that they may rot over time or be subject to termite infestation, which can lead to a weak wall likely to bulge or break. And, even though there are areas for water to slowly seep though, it is still a good idea to have a filtered drain or weep holes designed into the wall.

· Treated Wood - Treated wood retaining walls offer many of the same risks as retaining walls because over time it is susceptible to rot and termite infestation. It is a labor intensive construction, but it is usually lightweight and decently strong if built correctly. It is recommended to build a concrete footer to attach the wall to in order to keep it from shifting. Construction usually requires a clear area to be backfilled after the wall is built, so it is not always the best material to use if you are replacing an existing retaining wall. This wall still needs weep holes or drains designed into the wall. Standing water behind the wood will only increase risk of rot.

· Concrete - Concrete is a great material to use for retaining walls. Of course, there is a right and a wrong way to build a concrete retaining wall, which makes choosing your contractor a big job. There are many different designs that can lead to a successful concrete retaining wall, but one thing is for sure: there needs to be a footer beneath the wall to ensure success. Concrete is one of the most durable man-made products known to man. Most concrete poured today is engineered to last for over 50 years. Plus, concrete offers many decorative options as well. Aside from a plain, white concrete retaining wall, you can also pour a colored concrete retaining wall, stain a retaining wall after it has cured, pour into a patterned form, apply a vertical stamp material and pattern after poured, etc. Sealing the concrete wall can lead to an easy-to-maintain surface that rinses free of most dirt and grime.

· Blocks or Paver Stones - Engineered blocks that stack together to make a wall must be as simple as building with Legos, right? Nope. These retaining walls should also have a significant footer in order to support not only the weight of the dirt but also the weight of the wall. These blocks can be a unique look, but it may even be necessary to place a concrete retaining wall behind the blocks if there immense lateral earth pressure. In such a case, the concrete would be the structural element, using the blocks as a visual feature.

· Rock or Brick - One of the favorite looks for a retaining wall is natural stone or brick. These materials usually look more permanent and traditionally classy. However, just as we have seen with the other materials, it is necessary to have a concrete footer below grade to carry the weight and ensure success of the retaining wall. Like architectural blocks or paver systems, it may be necessary to back a masonry retaining wall with a concrete retaining wall for structural support.

Tablescapes - A Decorative Landscape For Your Table

Landscapes... Interiorscapes... Plantscapes... Tablescapes...

"Tablescape" is a relatively new term used in interior decorating. It is defined exactly as one would think- a landscape for your table. This, of course, encompasses a large area to play with. It could be as simple as a floral centerpiece, or as elaborate as a theatrical production for a buffet or photo shoot.

Decorative

  • How many of us neglect the most focal piece of furniture that we have- the dining room table?
  • Has your table become a dumping ground for mail, homework, craft projects?
  • Do you push your everyday life aside, just to be able to sit and eat a meal together?

Tablescapes - A Decorative Landscape For Your Table

These are just a few reasons that we should treat our dining area, whether it's in a dining room, kitchen, patio, or other area with tender loving hands. Who knows- you may even find time to sit with your family again!

With these ideas, tips, and trends- you will be able to create tabletop masterpieces in minutes! Using what you have on hand, buying new, and reinventing the existing pieces you already own, puts a whole new spin on things. Decorate your table for special occasions, holidays, seasonally, or "just because", and reconnect with the most basic element in a household- the family meal.

So lets decorate...

Spring Pruning Party

It's a beautiful spring day, and I have a blank table in front of me. After pruning a few red and yellow twig dogwood bushes, I am inspired to re-arrange my table!
Pruning my shrubs always leads to a new look in my house!

I cover the table first - I love linens, and use them regularly. This time I am going to choose an antique quilt of my great grandmother's that is collecting dust in my linen closet. The soft yellow color and rosettes will work well for this theme. Mix it up from your own stash of linens. A tablecloth, lace curtains, bedding- all will work as a cover-up.
If you have an exceptional table, perhaps just a runner or table square will do the trick. I always use runners and/or placemats on the diagonal on my rectangular table. By setting up my "mini tablescape" on one end of the table, I do not have to remove it every time we sit down to eat.

Now, back to my pruning...
I gather the yellow twig dogwood (pussy willows or flowering branches would be great for this also) in a clear vase with river rock on the bottom. Certainly switch out the rocks with marbles, aquarium gravel, dried peas or lentils, anything that you have in your pantry or closet. No need to add water- they will stay intact as is. This is your tallest piece, so do not be afraid to let the twigs and vase soar to the ceiling, ideally 3' or more from the table top.

What else do I have in the house? A pretty cake plate in white ceramic will do the trick. If you do not own a cake plate, take a canning jar (I love the shape of these and use them for everything), turn it upside down and put a pretty plate on top of it. Instant cake plate at the height we need! What to put on the plate? Back to the garden- an empty bird's nest will work. Spray this for little creatures, or purchase one at the craft store. A soft "nest" of ribbon to set it on, or realistic eggs to scatter are part of the look. Remember- this is not Easter, so go Spring-like with the eggs.

Position this next to the vase with your "prunings". We now need a third item of a different height. I may fill a colander or bowl with Granny Smith Apples for the color pop, or scatter candles around the base of the cake plate. Using three objects of varying heights balances your main centerpiece on this tablescape.

Pull out that fine china, and use it! If it is not dishwasher safe, and a real drag to wash- use the large plates as a charger plate underneath your everyday china. The table will always appear set, since the charger can stay in place, while you wash the other plates. If you have multiple sets of dishes, mix up the patterns and stay in soft tones of color for our Spring- like feel. Now is the time to use that floral pattern from Grandma, the fiesta ware in multiple colors, or the all-white palette.

If this is a special occasion tablescape, and you are using party favors, think terra cotta pots from in the garage. They have been sitting there all winter, screaming to be filled and used at each place setting! A pretty fresh primrose plant purchased at the garden center will kick the table up a notch.

For everyday tablescapes- you can still utilize the primroses, or small flowering plant in your centerpiece. I am a firm believer that fresh flowers make everything special, and these can be planted outside when the weather is right.

With this theme in hand- think fun!
Some ideas to try out:

  • Utensils can be tied together with raffia
  • Serve pink lemonade with a frozen strawberry as the ice cube
  • Gardening tools scattered on the table
  • Sun hats tied to the back of chairs
  • A wheelbarrow filled with ice for a makeshift bar
  • A picnic basket filled with help-yourself snacks(this is great for everyday with young children- their own after school snack station!).

Remember, Happy Spring and enjoy decorating your table!

Decorative Bird Cages

Whether purely for looks or for a bird's home, bird cages can be attractive decorator touches. They can be used as wall hangings, plant holders, centerpieces, and more.

Bird cages are available in many different materials, including wood, acrylic, stainless steel, metal, and iron. They are also available in some unique materials such as bamboo. Decorative bird cages are available in most any style imaginable. There are bird cages representative of most regions of the world--there are Oriental bird cages, Tuscan cages, and Arabian cages. There are also many bird cages featuring various architectural designs, such as domes and arches. Victorian cages are also quite popular. Some decorative bird cages are trimmed in gold or topped in marble. Some feature elaborate scrollwork. Others are even more whimsical, shaped like globes or hot-air balloons.

Decorative

Some decorative bird cages are purely decorative; others are functional. If you intend to use a decorative cage as a home for your bird, make sure that it is truly designed for that purpose. Do not sacrifice your bird's safety or comfort for style. For example, a tall narrow bird cage may look beautiful, but it doesn't give your bird ample space for moving. A round, globelike cage looks exotic, but it might not give your bird a space for perching. With careful consideration of your bird's needs, it is possible to find a bird cage that is both decorative and functional.

Decorative Bird Cages

Decorative bird cages are available at department stores and specialty pet stores. They are also available online. Purely decorative cages are available at many retail stores and in a wide range of prices, depending on size and material.

Decorative Kitchen Mats

Kitchen mats are generally used to cover a hard floor such as tile, cement or wood in front of a stove, island or sink. They help to prevent spills and splatters, as well as utensils from hitting the floor, allowing the floor to last longer. They also provide a cushiony surface when standing for long periods of time while working in the kitchen. Decorative mats provide all of these functions, but can change the entire décor of a kitchen with one fair swoop by removing the old and bringing in the new.

When you are purchasing a decorative mat for your home, you will want to look at size, shape and design. Decorative kitchen mats come in an array of styles including designs like wine and olive oil and stripes, solids and other designs that are sure to match any theme. The fun part of buying a decorative kitchen mat is there is no wrong choice. Lastly, when choosing a decorative mat for the kitchen, you'll want to make sure it's washable.

Decorative

Matching a decorative mat with your sense of style and kitchen decor.

Decorative Kitchen Mats

A solid color can often match anything in the room. It doesn't have to match the paint on the walls. It can match the placements on the table or pictures on the wall. You can mix and match. Have fun. Buy several mats that you like, take them home and keep the tags on them. Lay one down where you want it to go. If it doesn't match your décor or fit the area, try another one. Then, return the ones you don't want to keep.

Choosing the right size for decorative mats.

First, you'll want to measure the area where you want the mat to go. Decorative mats come in all shapes and sizes. If you leave the tag on it, you can return it if it doesn't fit the area.

Choosing the right shape for decorative kitchen mats.

When buying a decorative kitchen mat for the kitchen, you will probably want either a rectangular shaped mat or a square-shaped kitchen mat depending on the amount of space you want to cover. Many times one design on a decorative mat will come in a few different shapes and sizes and help to keep the same décor flowing throughout the kitchen. You can purchase a rectangular shaped mat for one area, and a square-shaped mat for another.

Choosing the thickness of the decorative kitchen mat.

The denser and thicker the mat, the better for your feet and legs in regards to fatigue. Most foam mats come in many different decorative themes, but they can be hard to balance on.

There are a few different types of decorative kitchen mats to choose from:
• Carpet - Carpeted mats come in different styles that should match any theme. You will want to purchase one that has a rubber backing to keep from slipping.
• Rubber/foam - The vast majority of decorative kitchen mats come in rubber/foam. However, foam mats do not last as long as others.

Decorative Metal Bollard Covers Enhance Security Bollards

Security bollard covers greatly add to the aesthetics of any building or construction site

Today, one of the major concerns for businesses, restaurants, retailers and hospitals is how motor vehicle traffic has increased and how unpredictable that traffic has become. Vehicles pose danger to almost any public and private building, as well as government locales, parks and even schools. Almost no building is safe from incurring damage due to accidental or deliberate vehicle infringement.

Decorative

Security bollards have become pivotal in their role of protecting buildings against any type of motor vehicle intrusion, while at the same time allowing access to people. While security bollards definitely fulfill their purpose - providing access control, pathway delimitation and asset-protection - the vast majority of them are simple, concrete-filled steel columns that provide no added aesthetic value whatsoever, conveying an unattractive image and actually detracting from the architectural style of the buildings where they belong.

Decorative Metal Bollard Covers Enhance Security Bollards

A piece of painted pipe does not truly blend into - much less enhance - most architectural schemes. However, this can be overcome by employing a decorative bollard cover. Many stand-alone bollards that do not have impact resistance of their own are designed with alternative mounting capability to slip over standard pipe sizes, forming an attractive and architecturally appropriate impact-resistance system. These decorative covers may also be available to enhance specially designed (but non-decorative) pipe-type bollards.

Bollard manufacturers today offer large collections of beautifully crafted security bollard covers that significantly, providing customers with the specific aesthetic improvements that their buildings/locales might require, without compromising the security bollards' protective features.

Bollard covers are designed to fit over a large variety and selection of steel pipe bollards. As pipe bollards become larger and taller, the available selection of decorative bollards covers is reduced. However, manufacturers strive to make available substantial collections of security bollard covers in varying sizes, shapes, materials and colors to provide customers with the necessary aesthetic and architectural configurations that they require.

There is no reason why buildings and other venues should not only be securely protected, but they should be protected in an aesthetically pleasing way. Decorative bollard post covers are one way that building owners can enhance the visual appeal of their properties without diminishing security. When you need to dress up unattractive security pipe bollards with bollard sleeves, or if you want to add period or contemporary architectural bollard highlighting in areas that require plain steel pipe bollards, you will find a large variety of elegant metal bollard cover designs in clear, crisp and long-lasting detail.
